Driveway Materials
Compare compactable gravel, recycled surfaces, and clean stone—and learn when existing gravel may be reusable.

Base condition, water, traffic, remaining gravel, and the desired finish determine the useful material options.
New stone is not always necessary
When enough sound aggregate remains, power raking and grading may reclaim gravel, rebuild the crown, and refresh the surface.
Compactable gravel
Dense-graded limestone and road gravel contain multiple particle sizes and fines that tighten under grading and compaction.
Recycled materials
Asphalt millings and crushed concrete can be practical, but source consistency, drainage, and base strength matter.
Clean stone
Open-graded stone drains through the layer but does not bind into the same smooth surface as dense-graded gravel.
